We love coming into port and having our friends and families waiting for us! Just last week, we sailed into Dublin for our second parent port of the year!

Each year, Class Afloat students visit up to 20 locations on land and at ports of call on 4 continents. Whether exploring on a land program in Europe, or sailing into ports, students participate in experiential programs, designed to showcase the country’s culture and history, while providing students with opportunities to explore the natural landscape.

Throwback to our time in the Dominican Republic! @classafloat students participate in one official voluntary service-learning project per semester. Last week our students put on their gloves and got to work cleaning up local beaches, protecting them from further impact from invasive species! We also got to take a closer look at corals from the area and learn about how they protect life underwater! Experiences like this take courses like marine biology and ocean science to the next level! Imagine LIVING your courses in addition to LEARNING your courses!

West Island College International - Class Afloat is a private school based in Nova Scotia that operates on a Class-A tall ship. We offer full grade 11 and grade 12 high school curriculums on board while sailing around the world to over 15 ports of call. At Class Afloat our goal is to utilize sail training tradition to explore and build a strong sense of community. With Kurt Hahn’s principles of experiential learning as a foundation, Class Afloat students develop their confidence, compassion, and awareness to graduate as global citizens for the 21st century. At present, there are 48 students on board, and over 20 professional crew/ faculty.

You will join the program on-land in Berlin, Germany in September of 2023 for a week long immersive faculty orientation. After welcoming students, and undertaking classes and travel in two locations (Berlin, Germany and Heino, Netherlands), you and the Class Afloat crew will board our floating campus, the Alexander von Humbolt II mid-October. The itinerary includes stops in Western Europe, Northern and Western Africa, South America, the Caribbean, and Northern Europe. Daily stipend, flights, health coverage, gear issue, accommodation, and food are all included.

Located on the banks of the Suriname River, students will have the chance to explore the ornate wooden Dutch colonial buildings of Paramaribo and tour the Amazon, learning from local guides about the medicinal properties of jungle plants. Crew members will also have the chance to ride on long, motorized canoes on the Upper Suriname River in the hopes of spotting caimans. Keep your eyes peeled!
