We’re looking back on 2024 with our student crew from last year (we miss you guys 🥹) and our student crew from this year (we miss you guys too, even though it’s only been one day 😅). Looking back at the year, it’s incredible to think of how far we’ve come, literally, over 30,000 nautical miles, but also individually and collectively (as a floatie family 💙). While no two days are the same, and some are tougher than others, looking back at the year as a whole is priceless. You just can’t describe it until you live it ⛵️

Standing watch on a tall ship isn’t just about keeping an eye on the horizon 🌊 it’s about building teamwork and leadership in ways you can’t find anywhere else ⛵️ Here are 6️⃣ ways standing watch can transform students into confident leaders and strong teammates:

1. Communication under pressure 💬: When you’re out at sea, clear communication is everything. Students learn how to relay important info quickly and effectively. It’s a crash course in making sure the message gets through no matter the situation.
2. Responsibility and accountability ⚓: Everyone on watch has a role, and the ship only functions when everyone pulls their weight. It’s an incredible way to learn responsibility—not just for your own tasks but for the safety and well-being of the entire crew.
3. Real-time problem-solving 🛠️: From tricky weather to equipment malfunctions, standing watch means facing challenges head-on. Students learn to think on their feet, work together, and come up with creative solutions when things don’t go as planned.
4. Leading by example 👩‍✈️: Leadership shifts depending on the task, giving everyone a chance to take the helm (literally and figuratively!). When you’re setting the example with hard work and focus, others follow, and you start to see just how much of a leader you can be.
5. Trust and collaboration 🤝: There’s no option but to trust each other when you’re out at sea. Whether you’re adjusting sails or navigating, everyone needs to rely on their teammates to get the job done. It’s all about building trust and working as a well-oiled team.
