We’ve been thinking a lot about Earth Day recently. And the more we sat with it, the more we kept coming back to where it all began. Class Afloat was founded in 1984. One year later, the UN declared International Youth Year under three pillars: participation, development, and peace. We were already living all three. In 2007, the UN added a fourth: environment. By then, our students had spent 23 years learning that the ocean isn’t just a classroom — it’s something worth fighting for. Some things take time to be named.
